Flatop Drop Rings are made from professional kiln-rated materials. Both materials are tested extensively in my own studio and perform equally well for glass forming. Smaller molds (usually under 12") are typically ceramic for faster production; larger molds are a composite of mullite and cordierite. Material thickness may vary based on availability. Smaller molds will be thinner than larger molds. Best I can do.
Listed dimensions are exact…No waiting till you get the mold to make glass to fit it!
We have not seen these molds crack, warp or crumble in any way during regular use in our studio.
Slumping molds/dropout rings should be coated with some sort of separator to prevent the glass from sticking to the mold. Standard shelf primer works fine but we’ve learned it can be a bit too slippery from time to time. OnGrade Studio recommends coating dropout rings larger than 3" with dōp: Dropout Paste....which is available in this store.
